How To Avoid Being Scammed Online!

Eva Yinuo - Scamstyle.com

Season 1, Episode 1 - Recognise the techniques online scammers use to dupe people

  1. They assume false identities: online criminals impersonate a family member or friend. They may also misuse the name and branding of reputable organizations, such as the government, a delivery service, or a bank, in their emails and messages to make you believe the content is trustworthy.

  2. They manipulate your emotions: online criminals often play on your feelings. They aim to make you curious or fearful, exploiting your trust, compassion, or lack of knowledge.

  3. They apply time pressure: online criminals urge you to act quickly, applying pressure. They don't give you time to uncover their deception. However, it's important to pause and consider, as legitimate organizations like banks or the government will never rush you into action.

  4. They fabricate emergencies: online criminals claim that something disastrous will occur if you don't comply promptly. For instance, they might threaten that your payment or account will be blocked if you don't update your information or make a payment, exploiting your fears to prevent doubt.

  5. They present enticing offers: online criminals use discounts or extravagant promotions to lure you. These significant discounts or rare deals often turn out to be too good to be true.

  6. They personalize their approach: online criminals claim to know, or actually know, something personal about you. They use information found online to create the illusion of familiarity.

  7. They act overly friendly: online criminals attempt to earn your trust by being exceptionally friendly and helpful, pretending to be your friend. They don't seem to have malicious intentions, which helps them gain your confidence.
