VNExpress - Around 50 people in Singapore have fallen victim to Pokemon trading card scams so far this year, losing at least SGD163,000 (US$121,000).
Scammers often advertise cards on platforms like Carousell, an online marketplace, and Facebook, then move conversations to private messaging apps like Telegram and WhatsApp, according to a report by local police on Thursday as cited by The Straits Times.
The online "dealers", in some cases, ask for up to SGD1,900 for a set of trading cards, screenshots provided by the police show.
Victims are asked to make payment via PayNow or bank transfer. Once a transaction has been completed, the scammers will disappear.
With at least 53 cases reported this year, police advise buyers to remain on official marketplace platforms and conduct transactions in person to verify card authenticity before payment.
