The number of elderly individuals being robbed by criminals posing as police officers is surging, according to recent police statistics.

In 2024, over 8,000 people reported incidents involving fake police officers, a significant increase from 544 the previous year, with 1,600 individuals falling victim and losing their valuables.

“This scam has drastically increased over the past year. It is becoming more organized and specifically targets those over 70,” stated the Dutch Police Force to broadcaster NOS.

Two out of ten people are deceived by the scam, where the criminals first call the victim, claiming, for example, that their personal data was found with burglars and offering to collect their money and jewellery for safekeeping.

Police indicated that publicity about the scam is increasing awareness. More people are coming forward, even if they feel embarrassed about being deceived.
